To The Yellowstone Country

To The Yellowstone Country

To The Yellowstone Country is the final work of a deeply moving and fascinating trilogy of a period largely unknown to most readers. (See Carrier-of-Bones, Pontiac.)

In 1769, Jean Pitre, a.k.a. Carrier-of-Bones, decides to move his little Seneca family from the Ohio country to the Post of St. Louis. Running into a fur trapper he once knew, he joins with him and others, and soon finds himself a trapper heading up the Missouri to Yellowstone country, a largely unexplored area and, by all accounts, a fur trapper’s paradise.

It is there while trapping that he confronts the most dangerous of animals, the great grizzly bears; he also finds himself in dire situations with the Sioux, the Blackfeet, and a twisted Canadian named Duval. Returning with a fortune in furs to St. Louis, he and his party are attacked by a vengeful Sioux war party.
